It has finally arrived; the last grasp of winter has left and it is time to get back into the garden and take care of the lawn.
According to the Royal Horticulture Society, it is time for the first mow of the year but there is so much to get stuck into at the start of spring to make your lawn stand out.
Here are the lawn care jobs to prioritise in the first flush of spring.
Depending on how the winter has treated your garden, you may have bare patches or patches of dead grass in your lawn. Start sowing lawn seed and keep your soil moist whilst the seed grows.
If you want an instant result for your lawn, this is also the time to lay down your new turf, but make sure it remains moist until it has established itself in your garden.
As well as this, make sure to use a garden fork to aerate any areas of your lawn that have been compacted.
Nitrogen is a vital nutrient in your lawn, so using a fertiliser that is high in nitrogen, such as compost or manure, can help to give your garden a noticeable boost at the start of the season.
If you have noticed any issues with moss and weeds, applying a weedkiller as well is a must.
The first cut of the new year should be with your lawnmower’s blades at the highest setting. With each subsequent mow, however, make sure to gradually lower the blades until your grass reaches the desired length.
